Why routine health checks matter – and the silent risks we’re catching early

By Dr Alice Scott, GP & Menopause Specialist

Recently one of my colleagues at Essex Private Doctors performed a routine health check on a patient who had no symptoms whatsoever. Everything seemed completely normal during the consultation. But the results from a standard screening test showed an unexpected abnormality. We referred the patient for further investigation, and it turned out to be cancer requiring surgery. As this has been caught at an early stage, the prognosis is likely to be good.

The patient had absolutely no idea. They felt fine. If they hadn’t booked that health check, how long would it have been before symptoms appeared? And at what stage would we have caught it then?

This is why health screening exists. Because by the time you feel unwell, we’re often playing catch-up rather than preventing problems altogether.

The start of the year is the perfect time to take stock of your health. Not as a New Year’s resolution that fades by February, but as a practical step toward knowing where you actually stand.

Why Most People Underestimate Their Health Risks

Here’s what I hear daily in our Essex clinic: “I feel fine, so there’s nothing wrong with me.” Or: “My mum didn’t have breast cancer, so I’m not at risk.” Or: “I’m too young to worry about heart disease.”

All of these reflect fundamental misunderstandings about health risk.

The family history myth is particularly persistent. Whilst BRCA genes and high-profile cases have raised awareness of genetic risk, they represent only a small proportion of cancers. The majority are sporadic – influenced by lifestyle, environment, hormones, and age rather than inherited mutations. Sometimes what appears to be a family pattern is actually shared lifestyle: the dietary habits, exercise patterns, and behaviours passed down through family culture rather than genetics.

The reality is that most serious health conditions develop silently over years before you notice anything wrong. Your blood pressure creeps up gradually. Your blood sugar inches higher. Your cholesterol accumulates. Your bones quietly lose density. And you feel absolutely nothing until you’re suddenly dealing with a stroke, diabetes, heart attack, or fracture.

Health Screening Myths vs Reality

“I’m too young to worry about this”
Reality: Conditions like pre-diabetes and high blood pressure commonly start developing in your 40s, long before you feel any symptoms.

“I feel fine, so I must be healthy”
Reality: That’s precisely when screening is most valuable. By the time you feel unwell, we’re often treating established disease rather than preventing it.

“Only people with family history need screening”
Reality: Most serious health conditions are influenced more by lifestyle than genetics. Lack of family history doesn’t eliminate risk.

“I can just wait for my NHS health check”
Reality: NHS checks are valuable but limited – offered only every 5 years from age 40-74 with basic blood tests and minimal follow-up time.

The Silent Risks We’re Finding in Essex Health Checks

During health checks at our clinic in Essex, we regularly identify serious conditions in people from across Chelmsford, Brentwood, Billericay, and surrounding areas who walked through the door feeling completely healthy. Here’s what’s happening in your body that you cannot feel:

Pre-Diabetes: The Reversible Risk

Your HbA1c test might show 41 this year (normal), 43 next year, 45 the year after. You feel identical each year. But you’re on a steady progression toward diabetes and all its complications – damage to small blood vessels in your eyes and extremities, increased cardiovascular disease risk, kidney problems, and nerve damage.

The good news is that pre-diabetes can be completely reversed with lifestyle changes. Last year, a 52-year-old patient from Brentwood came for a routine Well Man check. He felt completely well. His HbA1c was 46 – pre-diabetic. Six months later, after working with our registered dietitian Florence Rowe and making lifestyle changes, it’s 39. He’s reversed his pre-diabetes completely.

But only if you know you have it.

High Blood Pressure: Silent Vessel Damage

Unless it’s exceptionally high, you won’t feel raised blood pressure. Meanwhile, it’s quietly damaging your blood vessels, straining your heart, and increasing your stroke and heart attack risk. We find undiagnosed hypertension regularly in health checks across Essex. Treatment is straightforward and significantly reduces your risk of serious cardiovascular events.

High Cholesterol: Building Problems Over Decades

Completely symptomless. Over years and decades, it’s building fatty deposits in your arteries that eventually lead to heart attacks and strokes. Someone in their 40s or 50s, feeling perfectly healthy, often has significantly elevated cholesterol that’s been causing vascular changes for years.

Warning Sign Most Men Ignore: Erectile Dysfunction

Here’s something that genuinely shocks male patients: loss of early morning erections often occurs several years before a heart attack.

Why? The small blood vessels supplying the penis are affected by cardiovascular disease earlier than larger vessels supplying your heart. When those smaller vessels aren’t functioning properly due to atherosclerosis, you get erectile dysfunction. Several years later, the disease has progressed enough to affect your coronary arteries, and you’re at serious risk of a heart attack.

It’s a warning sign most men ignore out of embarrassment, not realising the connection to serious heart disease. If you’re experiencing this, a Heart Health Check could be life-saving as it enables us to tackle risk factors which may also be increasing your risk of heart attack and therefore reduce the likelihood of this happening

Obesity and Cancer Risk: The Connection Most People Don’t Know

This surprises patients more than almost anything else we discuss: obesity is a significant risk factor for multiple cancers, including breast cancer, bowel cancer, endometrial cancer, kidney cancer, oesophageal cancer, and pancreatic cancer, among others.

Why? Obesity creates a pro-inflammatory state in your body. Chronic inflammation affects how your cells function and can contribute to the development of various cancers. The excess fat tissue doesn’t just sit there – it’s metabolically active, producing hormones and inflammatory chemicals that affect your entire system.

This is actually encouraging news in a way, because weight is something you can change. Unlike age or genetics, this is a modifiable risk factor. Addressing obesity reduces your cancer risk alongside all the other health benefits of maintaining a healthy weight.

At Essex Private Doctors, we don’t just identify the problem and send you away. Our registered dietitian Florence Rowe provides integrated support, and for appropriate patients, we offer GLP-1 weight loss programmes with proper medical supervision – not the rapid, unsustainable weight loss you see advertised elsewhere, but gradual, medically-guided programmes that actually work.

Osteopenia and Osteoporosis: Silent Bone Loss

Bone density decreases without symptoms. You feel fine right up until you fracture from what should have been a minor fall. By then you’ve got established osteoporosis requiring treatment. Catching osteopenia early means we can prevent progression with lifestyle changes, supplements, and sometimes medication.

We can arrange DEXA bone density scanning when clinically indicated based on your risk factors and assessment.

Early-Stage Cancers

Occasionally, we find malignancies in completely asymptomatic patients during routine screening. This is uncommon, but when it happens, early detection makes an enormous difference to treatment options and outcomes.

What We’re Actually Finding in Our Essex Health Checks

Let me be specific about real findings from our health screening service across Essex:

  • Pre-diabetes in patients who had no symptoms and no idea their blood sugar was creeping up
  • Significantly raised blood pressure in people who would have continued for years with uncontrolled hypertension
  • Concerning cholesterol levels substantially increasing cardiovascular risk
  • Early liver problems in people who didn’t realise their alcohol intake was problematic
  • Risk factors requiring DEXA bone density scanning
  • Obesity-related health risks requiring intervention and dietetic support
  • ADHD medication side effects affecting cardiovascular health or metabolism
  • Abnormal findings requiring urgent specialist referral

The patient I mentioned at the start isn’t an isolated case. Health screening catches problems. The question is whether we catch them early when they’re treatable, or late when options are more limited.

Recommended Health Screening by Age

In Your 40s:
Focus on establishing baseline measurements and identifying early risk factors. This is when pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol problems often start developing silently. Essential screening if you have lifestyle risk factors (smoking, high alcohol intake, sedentary lifestyle, obesity).

In Your 50s:
Comprehensive screening becomes essential, not optional. Cancer risks increase significantly with age. Cardiovascular disease risk accelerates. Women experience hormonal changes affecting multiple health parameters. Regular monitoring is crucial.

60s and Beyond:
Priority on comprehensive cardiovascular assessment, cancer screening, bone health, and managing multiple risk factors. Regular health checks allow us to adjust treatments and catch problems before they become serious.

Should You Book a Health Check in Essex?

You should consider a comprehensive health check if:

✓ You’re over 40 and haven’t had thorough screening recently
✓ You’re over 50 (regular screening becomes essential)
✓ You have family history of heart disease, diabetes, or stroke
✓ You have lifestyle risk factors: smoking, high alcohol intake, sedentary lifestyle, obesity
✓ You’re taking ADHD medications (we see specific side effects requiring monitoring)
✓ You’re male experiencing erectile dysfunction
✓ You’re female approaching or past menopause
✓ You simply want to know where you stand health-wise as you age

Taking responsibility for your health and seeking information is sensible preventative medicine.

What Happens If We Find Something?

This is what patients worry about. But here’s the reality: finding a problem early gives you options.

If we identify pre-diabetes, we can work with you to reverse it with lifestyle changes. Our registered dietitian Florence Rowe provides integrated nutritional support, and we can discuss options including GLP-1 medications if appropriate. We’ve had numerous patients completely reverse their pre-diabetes with proper support.

If we find high blood pressure, we can treat it and significantly reduce your stroke risk. If we discover raised cholesterol, we can address it before you develop cardiovascular disease. If your assessment indicates increased osteoporosis risk, we can arrange DEXA scanning and implement preventative strategies before fractures occur.

For ADHD patients, if we identify medication-related side effects affecting your cardiovascular health or metabolism, Dr Grundy-Wheeler can adjust your treatment to maintain your mental health benefits whilst protecting your physical health.

Even when we find something more serious, catching it early almost always means better treatment options and better outcomes.

What often happens is we find modifiable risk factors rather than established disease. We identify that you’re heading in the wrong direction whilst there’s still time to change course. That’s valuable information that puts you in control of your health future.

Private Health Screening vs NHS: What’s the Difference?

NHS health checks are valuable but limited in scope. They’re typically offered every five years from age 40-74 and focus primarily on cardiovascular disease risk. Blood tests are basic, consultation time is limited Any follow-up depends on GP availability and NHS capacity – which in Essex, as elsewhere, is severely stretched.

Our private health checks in Essex provide:

Comprehensive Testing:

  • Extended blood test panels beyond basic NHS screening
  • ECG included as standard
  • Prostate and testosterone screening for men
  • Access to additional testing (DEXA scans, body composition analysis) when indicated

Immediate Access:

  • Book this week, have your check next week
  • No waiting lists or months-long delays
  • Results turned around quickly

Extended Consultation Time:

  • Up to 60 minutes minimum for the Well Man or Well Woman Health Check, 30 minutes for the Heart Health Check, and 60 minutes for an Enhanced Health Check (Well Man or Well Woman + Health Health Check)
  • Proper time to discuss results, lifestyle, family history, and concerns
  • Personalised health plans, not generic advice sheets

Integrated Follow-Up:

  • Dietitian support for weight, pre-diabetes, cardiovascular risk
  • ADHD medication management if needed
  • Menopause specialist care
  • Direct access to specialists without lengthy NHS referral processes

Ongoing Support:

  • Regular monitoring for conditions like pre-diabetes where follow-up makes the difference
  • Medication adjustments and optimisation
  • Lifestyle coaching and support

We’re not replacing NHS care – we’re complementing it by catching problems early and providing the time and attention that NHS constraints don’t currently allow.

Ready to Take Control of Your Health?

You can’t change your age. You can’t change your genetics (and actually, genetics matter less than most people think for common diseases). But you can change your lifestyle, manage your risk factors, and catch developing problems before they become serious.

Silent risks only catch you by surprise if you don’t go looking for them first.

How is private health screening different from NHS health checks?
Private screening provides more comprehensive testing (including ECG and extended blood panels), immediate access without waiting lists, up to 60 minute consultation for our Well Man and Well Woman Health Checks, versus 15-20 minutes for an NHS screening, and ongoing support if issues are found including access to our dietitian and specialists. NHS health checks are valuable but more limited in scope and follow-up.

How long does a health check take?
Initial consultation and examination typically takes up to 60 minutes for a Well Man or Well Woman Health Check, 30 minutes for a Heart Health Check, and 60 minutes for an Enhanced Health Check (Well Man or Well Woman + Heart Health Check). Blood tests are processed within 3-5 days, and we schedule a follow-up consultation (in person or by phone) to discuss results comprehensively and create your personalised health plan. Total time commitment for the Well Man or Well Woman Health Check is approximately 75 minutes across both appointments.

I feel completely healthy – do I still need screening?
Yes. The conditions we’re screening for – high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, early cancers – cause no symptoms in their early stages. That’s precisely why screening matters. We regularly find significant problems in patients from across Essex who feel perfectly fine. Early detection means better outcomes and more treatment options.

What areas of Essex do you serve?
We’re based in Brentwood and provide private health checks to patients across Essex including Chelmsford, Billericay, Wickford, Maldon, Witham, Braintree, and surrounding areas. We have convenient parking nearby and are easily accessible from the A12 and A130. Many patients also come from North London and Hertfordshire for our specialist services, and we are just a short walk from Brentwood Railway Station.

Do I need to prepare for the blood tests?
Yes, we ask you to fast for 8-12 hours before your appointment (water is fine). This ensures accurate results for your diabetes and cholesterol screening. We typically schedule morning appointments to make fasting easier. Bring a list of any medications or supplements you take.

What happens if you find something concerning?
We’ll discuss any findings during your follow-up consultation and create a clear action plan. For issues like pre-diabetes or high blood pressure, we can start treatment and monitoring immediately. You’ll have access to our dietitian Florence Rowe if needed. For more serious findings, we can arrange prompt, specialist referral through our established networks – or you can liaise with your NHS GP, if you want to see onward care through the NHS.

Can I bring someone with me to the appointment?
Absolutely. Many patients bring a partner or family member, particularly to the results consultation. An extra pair of ears can be helpful when discussing health information and planning lifestyle changes.
