MENOPAUSE AND SLEEP
Menopause and Sleep Clinic in Essex
Sleep disturbance is one of the most common symptoms women experience during perimenopause and menopause.
Some women struggle to fall asleep, but many describe a different pattern: waking repeatedly through the night, waking hot or sweaty, or waking at 3-4am with an active mind and being unable to get back to sleep.
At Essex Private Doctors, our Sleep Clinic offers specialist assessment and treatment for sleep problems, including those linked to menopause.
Why menopause affects sleep
Sleep is closely linked to hormonal, emotional and metabolic health. During perimenopause and menopause, fluctuating and falling oestrogen and progesterone levels can affect the brain systems involved in temperature regulation, mood, stress response and sleep-wake control.
This can lead to:
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- More frequent waking
- Lighter, less restorative sleep
- Early morning waking
- Anxiety or feeling “tired but wired”
- Daytime fatigue and brain fog
- Reduced emotional resilience
- Worsening cravings, appetite changes or weight gain
Poor sleep can then become a vicious cycle. When sleep is disrupted, cortisol and stress levels may rise, making the nervous system more alert. This can make it harder to return to sleep, and over time can affect mood, concentration, metabolism, blood sugar regulation, blood pressure and overall health.

Our Sleep Clinic approach
At Essex Private Doctors, we take a detailed, whole-person approach to sleep. We do not simply treat poor sleep as an isolated symptom or assume it is “just menopause”.
Dr Alice Scott and Dr Zoe Bailey have undertaken additional postgraduate training in the management of sleep disorders. They also have specialist experience in menopause care, allowing them to assess the overlap between hormones, sleep, stress, mood, physical symptoms and long-term health.
A sleep assessment may include discussion of:
- Your sleep pattern and night-time symptoms
- Menopause symptoms, including hot flushes and night sweats
- Stress, anxiety, mood and cognitive symptoms
- Snoring, breathing symptoms and possible sleep apnoea
- Restless legs or limb movements
- Pain, bladder symptoms or reflux
- Medication, alcohol and caffeine
- Lifestyle, work patterns and routines
- Daytime fatigue, concentration and energy levels
Where appropriate, we can arrange blood tests to look for contributing medical factors such as iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, vitamin deficiencies, inflammation or metabolic issues. We can also arrange formal sleep studies where symptoms suggest obstructive sleep apnoea or another sleep disorder.
For patients with insomnia, we can offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia, known as CBT-I.
CBT-I is the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. It is not simply “sleep hygiene” or general advice about having a bath and avoiding screens. It is a structured, evidence-based programme that helps retrain the brain and body to sleep more effectively.
CBT-I may be helpful if you:
- Cannot switch off at night
- Wake frequently and struggle to get back to sleep
- Wake early and feel anxious or alert
- Feel tired but wired
- Spend long periods awake in bed
- Worry about the impact of poor sleep
- Have started to lose confidence in your ability to sleep
CBT-I can be offered as a separate series of appointments alongside menopause care. Face-to-face CBT-I allows treatment to be tailored to your symptoms, lifestyle, medical history and menopause stage, rather than relying on a generic online pathway.

Menopause and sleep care, together
For some women, optimising menopause treatment can significantly improve sleep, particularly where hot flushes, night sweats, mood symptoms or genitourinary symptoms are contributing. For others, insomnia has become established and needs targeted sleep treatment in its own right.
The strength of our Sleep Clinic is that we can look at both.
We can consider hormone health, sleep disorders, stress physiology, metabolic health, mood, lifestyle and long-term risk together. This is particularly important because poor sleep affects so many aspects of health, including energy, appetite, weight, insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, cardiovascular risk, pain sensitivity and emotional wellbeing.
Our aim is to help you understand why your sleep has changed and create a personalised plan to improve it
