SLEEP SUPPORT FOR SHIFT WORKERS
Sleep Support for Shift Workers in Essex
Working shifts can have a significant effect on sleep, energy, concentration and overall wellbeing.
Many people assume that feeling exhausted is simply part of working nights, early mornings or rotating shifts. While some disruption is inevitable, persistent poor sleep should not be ignored. The right assessment and a personalised plan can make shift work more manageable and help reduce the impact it has on your health and daily life. We offer sleep support for shift workers.
Why does shift work affect sleep?
Your body runs with a daily repeatable pattern known as the circadian rhythm – it’s like an internal 24-hour clock. This helps regulate when you feel alert and when you feel sleepy.
Shift work can force you to stay awake when your body expects to sleep and try to sleep when your body is promoting wakefulness. This can lead to a pattern similar to repeated jet lag.
- Difficulty falling asleep after a shift
- Short, light or broken daytime sleep
- Severe tiredness during work
- Poor concentration or slower reactions
- Irritability, low mood or reduced motivation
- Difficulty returning to a normal routine on days off
- Increasing reliance on caffeine, alcohol or sleeping tablets
These problems can be particularly difficult for people working rotating shifts, several consecutive nights or very early starts.

When should you seek help?
It may be helpful to arrange an assessment if:
- You are struggling to obtain enough sleep around your shifts
- You regularly feel dangerously sleepy at work or while driving
- You feel exhausted even after time off
- Poor sleep is affecting your mood, memory or concentration
- You are worried about making mistakes at work
- You rely on caffeine, alcohol or medication to manage your shifts
- You have been told that you snore loudly or stop breathing during sleep
- You have tried general sleep advice but it has not helped
Not every sleep problem in a shift worker is caused by the shift pattern alone. Other conditions, including insomnia, sleep apnoea, restless legs, menopause symptoms, anxiety, pain or medication effects, may also be contributing.
How we can help
At Essex Private Doctors, we offer a detailed assessment for people whose sleep is being affected by shift work.
Your consultation will look at:
- Your exact shift pattern
- When you sleep on workdays and days off
- How much sleep you are actually getting
- The impact on your work, mood and health
- Your use of naps, caffeine, alcohol and medication
- Your driving and occupational safety
- Whether another sleep disorder may be present
We may ask you to complete a sleep and shift diary so that we can identify the pattern more clearly.
The aim is to develop a plan that works with your real life, rather than giving generic advice that may not fit your rota, commute, family responsibilities or work demands.

A personalised approach
The most effective strategy depends on the type of shifts you work. Someone working permanent nights may need a different approach from someone working occasional nights, rapid rotations or very early starts.
Your plan may consider areas such as:
- Sleep timing
- Recovery between shifts
- Daytime sleep protection
- Strategic use of naps
- Timing of light exposure
- Caffeine timing
- Returning to daytime routines
- Safety around driving and work
We do not recommend a one-size-fits-all approach. Advice that helps one shift worker may make another person’s sleep more disrupted.
What about sleeping tablets or melatonin?
Sleeping tablets do not correct the underlying mismatch between shift work and the body clock. Some may also cause grogginess, dependence or reduced alertness.
Melatonin may be appropriate for selected people, but its effect depends heavily on timing. Taking it at the wrong time may shift the body clock in an unhelpful direction.
Medication should only be considered after a proper assessment of your sleep pattern, medical history, other medication and occupational requirements.

Why we should address this
Persistent sleep disruption can affect:
- Concentration and decision-making
- Mood and emotional resilience
- Driving safety
- Work performance
- Appetite and metabolism
- Cardiovascular health
- Relationships and quality of life
For people working in safety-critical roles, untreated sleepiness may also place colleagues, patients or members of the public at risk.
Book your Sleep Clinic appointment
The first step is a detailed sleep assessment with one of our GPs with additional training in sleep medicine.
During this appointment, we will review your symptoms, shift pattern, medical history and current sleep routine. Where appropriate, we may recommend further assessment, blood tests or investigation for an underlying sleep disorder.
You will then receive personalised recommendations based on your working pattern and individual needs.
