RSV Vaccination

RSV Vaccination

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a highly contagious virus that affects the airways and lungs, leading to symptoms similar to the common cold, such as coughing, sore throat, sneezing, and a runny or blocked nose.
However, RSV can cause more severe illness, particularly in vulnerable groups like infants, older adults, and people with underlying health conditions such as heart or lung disease or weakened immune systems.
In severe cases, RSV can lead to pneumonia and other life-threatening conditions, sometimes requiring hospitalisation.

We have RSV vaccines available at Essex Private Doctors for our private patients.

How RSV Spreads

RSV infections can occur throughout the year, with peaks during the winter months.
The virus spreads through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes.
Even though good hygiene, such as covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing and frequent hand washing, can reduce the risk, RSV infections can still be difficult to avoid.

RSV is common in young children, but it can be particularly dangerous for older people.
Every year, thousands of older adults in the UK require hospital treatment for RSV, and some may not survive the infection.

At Essex Private Doctors, we offer the RSV vaccine, which is the most effective way to protect yourself from severe illness caused by the virus.

Who Should Get the RSV Vaccine?

To protect your newborn baby, it is advised to receive the vaccine from 28 weeks of pregnancy onward.

This age group is at the highest risk of severe RSV infection, and a single dose of the vaccine can offer protection for several years.

If you turned 80 on or after 1 September 2024, you are eligible for the RSV vaccine until 31 August 2025.
Even if you missed the NHS cut-off date for the vaccine, Essex Private Doctors can still provide it privately.

About the RSV Vaccine

Most people will have had RSV infections throughout their lives, but immunity wanes over time. A single dose of the RSV vaccine boosts your immune response, helping to protect you during periods when you are at the highest risk of serious illness.

The RSV vaccine is given as a simple injection into the upper arm. It’s a quick and easy process that can be done during a routine visit to Essex Private Doctors.

At Essex Private Doctors, we offer two types of RSV vaccines:

Arexvy

Abrysvo

Both vaccines are designed to provide long-lasting protection from severe illness caused by RSV. Our medical team will help you choose the right vaccine for your needs

Is the RSV Vaccine Safe?

Yes.  The RSV vaccine has been thoroughly tested and approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The vaccines are non-live, meaning they cannot cause RSV infection, even in people with weakened immune systems or in pregnant women. Common side effects, such as swelling at the injection site or a mild headache, are usually short-lived and mild.

Side Effects

Most people experience only mild side effects from the RSV vaccine. These may include:

– Swelling or pain at the injection site
– Headache
– Aching muscles or joints

Severe side effects, such as allergic reactions, are extremely rare. If you have any concerns about side effects, our team at Essex Private Doctors is here to provide guidance and reassurance.

Who Should Avoid the Vaccine?

Most people can safely receive the RSV vaccine. However, please inform us if you:

– Have had a severe allergic reaction to any vaccines in the past.
– Are currently feeling unwell with a high fever.
– Have any serious medical conditions or are taking regular medications.

In such cases, our experienced doctors will advise whether it is safe for you to receive the vaccine or recommend the best course of action.

RSV Vaccination FAQs

Can I have the vaccine if I’m immunosuppressed?

The safety and effectiveness of RSV vaccines in people with weakened immune systems are still being studied. However, the vaccine may offer reduced protection in these cases. Please consult with our doctors for tailored advice.

Can I have the vaccine if I’m on blood-thinning medication?

Yes, but you may experience some bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Let our medical team know if you are on blood thinners or have a clotting disorder.

Do I need to have the vaccine every year?

No, a single dose is expected to provide protection for several years.

If you fall into one of the high-risk categories or want to take proactive steps to protect yourself from RSV, contact Essex Private Doctors to schedule your RSV vaccination today. We offer a convenient, professional service, ensuring your health and well-being are our top priority.
