How does Trucheck™ Intelli blood testing work?

Malignant (cancerous) tumours release cancer cells into the blood stream, and these are known as Circulating Tumour Cells (CTCs). These travelling cells are how malignant tumours spread and metastasise to other areas of the body.

The Trucheck™ Intelli blood test is able to detect CTCs, and if CTCs are found, it’s unambiguous evidence of an underlying malignancy. Only cancerous tissues release these cells.

The test is highly sensitive – this means that on average, it will be able to detect CTCs in 88.2% of people who have them. This means it will miss around 11.8% of cases.

The test is also highly specific. Specificity is the ability of a test to correctly detect a positive result, and the Trucheck™ Intelli  blood test accurately detects CTCs 99.97% of the time.

How it works

  • Initial Enquiry: Ring Essex Private Doctors to express your interest and book an appointment with one of our GPs in a normal “GP appointment” to discuss the test and to check the suitability of it for you. The cost of this appointment is our usual GP appointment fee. Alternatively we can discuss this with you if you book for a full MOT and it will be included within the price of the MOT. We will then refer you to our clinical partners at The Cancer Screening Trust.

  • Brief Health Assessment: The Cancer Screening Trust will then contact you, ask you to complete a questionnaire and then conduct a brief health assessment and pre-consultation telephone call with you to ensure the test is appropriate and the answer any of your questions/concerns.

  • Blood Sample Collection: The Cancer Screening Trust will liaise with us to arrange for you to return to the clinic for the blood test and this will be couriered to their laboratory the same day.

  • Laboratory Analysis: Your sample undergoes meticulous examination at a state-of-the-art laboratory.

  • Results Delivery: The Cancer Screening Trust will communicate the results with you via a telephone call and email the turn around time for results is 12-18 days

  • Personalised Consultation: The Cancer Screening Trust will arrange a consultation with their clinical lead who will talk you through your results, any will advise you of next steps to be taken, should your test be positive for the presence of CTCs.

Understanding Your Trucheck™ Intelli Results

  • Positive: Circulating tumour cells detected, suggesting the presence of cancer. In many instances, we can even suggest the likely origin.

  • Negative: No circulating tumour cells were found, indicating a lower cancer risk. (Do bear in mind, no test is 100% infallible.)

  • Indeterminate: Circulating tumour cells are present, but their origin is unclear. We’ll provide a follow-up test at no additional charge.

Is Trucheck™ Intelli suitable for everyone?

  • The test is a screening tool for asymptomatic individuals (i.e. people with no cancer symptoms) over 40 years of age.

    The test cannot be offered to individuals who:

  • Have prior history of diagnosis or treatment of any cancer

  • Have clinical or radiological suspicion of cancer at present.

  • Are under the age of 40 at the time of the test

    A: While remarkably comprehensive, Trucheck™ Intelli specialises in solid tumours. It’s not designed to detect blood cancers such as leukaemia. Always discuss any symptoms or concerns you have with us.
